From Hidden to Discovered:
A Visual Journey through Hong Kong’s Brutalist Architecture
Starting from scratch, the local study of Brutalist architecture has spanned three years, involving a team of twenty architects, architecture students, photographers and artists. Beyond researching historical archives, the team personally explored various districts, uncovering hidden architectural gems in the city. We ventured into numerous Brutalist cases, capturing and documenting their essence while closely examining their architectural details and experiencing their spatial aesthetics.
The book Unknown Brutalism Architecture in Hong Kong seeks to reshape the discourse and historical narrative of a segment of Hong Kong’s architecture. Meanwhile, DETAILS and AESTHETICS: Unknown Brutalism Architecture in Hong Kong invites the public to appreciate the intricate details defining these structures and experience the masterful ingenuity of pioneering architects. Additionally, this book serves as a record of the team’s journey to 34 Brutalist buildings, forming a crucial visual archive of this three-year research endeavour.
Through carefully curated documentary photographs and written narratives, let us embark together on a visual journey to the world of Brutalist architecture in Hong Kong.

“It is an architecture of innocence without historical and ideological responsibilities. It is never perceived as dystopic as it bears no intention of anti-utopia in the first place. It is an architecture of stoicism and resilience that reflects the social and political climate during a specific time. It is an instrumental architecture to transit Hong Kong from a manufacturing hub to a service centre during a time when Brutalist buildings towered over a less tall, less dense and less shiny version of the city compared with that today.” ─Mark Lee / Principal and founding partner, Johnston Marklee
