序言~~How to use Vantage Vistas: A Practical Guide to English Conversation
Vantage Vistas: A Practical Guide to English Conversation is versatile enough to use in formal classroom settings, in informal gatherings among English students, and by individuals studying English on their own. Regardless of which means of study you use, I urge you to make use of a reliable paper or online dictionary or thesaurus. I recommend Merriam-Webster online dictionary and thesaurus because it’s the American standard.
Whenever possible, use English to learn English, just as you used your native language to learn your native language when you were younger. Some of your most useful tools will be reading, a dictionary, a thesaurus, and the internet. When possible, let English speak for itself. Learning will be more enjoyable and more rewarding.
Depending on your level of English ability and your confidence, you may use any of several study strategies or a combination of strategies. Vantage Vistas: A Practical Guide to English Conversation features the kinds of exercises and questions that are found in the newest version of the TOEIC® test.
In this textbook, lessons and exercises are grouped by subject matter. Feel free to begin with the sections that seem easiest or most interesting to you. If you wish, feel free to skip around, selecting from here and there as you would select items from a buffet.
These lessons, as you would expect, are designed to be useful and interesting, but they are more than that. They are also designed to stimulate your imagination, opening doors to new ways of looking at your surroundings and experiences. You can make your English learning an adventure in discovery and fun.
Once you’ve become familiar with the questions and answers in these exercises, you may want to create your own exercises for each lesson. You can go to the internet and seek further information on the vocabulary words and on the people and things discussed in the lessons. You may plan an imaginary journey abroad and begin checking actual car rentals on the internet, or you may plan a homestay in another land.
I encourage you to use your imagination and discover your own vistas in English language learning!
