A Blueprint for Building Things That Last
Trust isn't a trophy — it's a practice. You can't just earn it once; you have to keep earning it.
Rule 1
MAKE IT PERSONAL
Trust is won (and sometimes) lost person-to person, not organization-to-organization. Always think of trust in personal terms, even when working at scale.
Rule 2
BE POSITIVE ABOUT PEOPLE
People are born to connect and collaborate. It's hardwired into our DNA. Therefore, you'll get more done if you work with human nature than against it.
Rule 3
CREATE A CLEAR PURPOSE
The best way to get people to collaborate and to work together is to give them a strong, clear, and positive sense of purpose. Do that and something wonderful can and will emerge.
Rule 4
BE TRUSTING
Trust in the power of reciprocity. If you want people to trust you, start by giving them trust first. Extend trust to get trust.
Rule 5
BE CIVIL
We teach toddlers the rules of civility, but then tend to ignore them altogether as adults. Remember why we do that in the first place. Your mother was right all along. Treat people with civility.
Rule 6
BE INDEPENDENT
To be independent means you know your mission and stick to it. You don't take sides in the disputes of others, who are pursuing their own agendas. Be independent.
Rule 7
BE TRANSPARENT
Transparency always builds trust. This is true especially when at first glance you have something to hide. Be transparent always and everywhere to be trusted.

Be trustworthy
Just as trust is the key to all relationships, so also is trust the glue of organizations. It is the cement that holds the bricks together.
