After a long 30-hour flight from the U.S., we arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. My husband and I stayed at a lovely lodge owned by the company that runs Zulu Nyala, the game park we were headed for. The lodge offered good meals, two swimming pools, and comfortable accommodations to help us get over our jet lag quickly. We stayed there only a day and then boarded a small plane that would take us to the reserve.
At Zulu Nyala, we met a friendly driver who took us out two or three times per day to view the animals and explore the terrain. This part of Africa, Zululand, is unlike Tanzania or Kenya, which have large savannahs and lots of animals as far as you can see. Here, there are rolling hills, and the bush is thick, so you have to look for animals among the green growth.
The animals are gorgeous in their natural setting, and we saw multitudes of zebras, giraffes, and antelope. There were also hippos, which are very stinky, and even a rhino that butted our jeep one day. The varieties of monkeys, baboons, and cute little warthogs were a treat to observe. However, one event we experienced was far from pleasant.

One day we were quietly observing a large female elephant from a short distance. We were with our guide in an open-air Land Rover, and the animal was much larger than our vehicle. Suddenly, something about us apparently made her angry. Making loud noises and flapping her ears wildly, she charged us. We were able to escape in the jeep, but the experience left even our guide frightened.
When the safari was over, we flew to Port Elizabeth, where another guide drove us down the Garden Route to Cape Town, a distance of about 150 miles. This section of road has beautiful sea views, mountains, canyons, and even some caves. One town along the way is Knysna, which has a lagoon guarded by giant rock formations known as the Heads. The ocean channels between the rocks create dangerous waves.
Cape Town topped off our trip. It held many wonders including Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope, which is the very southern tip of Africa. My favorite surprise was the penguins that live on a beach out at the tip of the cape. Seeing these comical animals in their native habitat was the icing on the cake of a fantastic vacation.
South Africa is a land full of natural beauty and amazing wild animals. Although it is a distant destination, it is more than worth the long trip.
